Velofix Mobile Bike Shops

With today’s busy lifestyles, we are all looking for ways to save time. There’s a host of products/services available delivered right to our homes or offices. A few common ones come to mind, including: groceries/fresh ingredient meals, car window or tire replacement, dry cleaning, lawn mower/snow blower services. Add a mobile bike shop to the list. Earlier this year, I received an invite to the Chicago North Shore Velofix franchise launch party. The concept of a bike shop coming to my home, office or event was intriguing. So I went and had a look.

Common Fitting Problems And How to Address Them

I am a USA Cycling Level 2 coach and specialize in bike fitting, power and pedaling efficiency coaching. When doing fittings, I regularly see significant problems that cyclists have no idea are causing the pain and discomfort they're feeling during and after riding. There are several fairly common problems, but today I'm going to take a look at the top 3, and give you some tips on how to avoid them. Before I get into a discussion of the specific problems though, it helps to understand the underlying issues of fitting a bike to a rider.

Philly Bike Expo 2016 - 3 Noteworthy Bikes

Editor's Note: A news service hired by Philly Bike Expo to document the show offered to share content with us, so I graciously accepted. What follows are three separate brief-but-interesting articles on three different bikes (and the frame-builders behind them) from the show. Featured are Craig Calfee’s Manta Pro, a road racing bike with rear suspension; a creation by Japanese builder Yoshiaki Nagasawa that includes an early '90s custom frameset built up with all '80s components; and a Royal H “Hollingsworth” inspired in looks and stately design by the English brand Holdsworth.

What’s the Difference Between Bike Sizing and Bike Fitting?

Bike sizing is done first and happens BEFORE you purchase your bicycle. Bike sizing deals mainly with the size of a frame. The bike shop or retailer should measure you to help determine which size frame is best suited for you. Bike fitting takes the bike and, through tweaks or changes to different components, fits the bike to the person. The big 3 are CLEAT fitting, SADDLE height/fore/aft positioning and COCKPIT SIZING, including stem length and bar width.

Capsule Bike Reviews from CycloFest 2016

RBR’s John Marsh and I attended CycloFest 2016 at the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, N.C., October 20-21.This was the inaugural CycloFest, put on by the organizers of Interbike to make it easier for East Coast  buyers, exhibitors and bicycle enthusiasts to come together. John and I got to test a number of high-end road bike beauties (and a couple of others), riding alongside each other while discussing the merits of each bike – and doing back-to-back comparisons. This gave us a unique opportunity to get a great feel for the individual characteristics of each bike.

New Gear Report: Schiller Bike

The Schiller Bike is an exceptional piece of engineering. It is, in effect, a bike on pontoons using pedal power to propel itself around your chosen body of water. Short of a full-blown product review, the following is an informational report on this cool product. Even if it isn't something most RBR readers would actually consider purchasing, we thought it had broad appeal simply from the cycling tech perspective.

Understanding Frame Size When Choosing a Bike

You’re shopping for a new bike and frame size has you stumped. Some bikes have the standard frame design you’re accustomed to. You could simply buy one the same size as your old bike. But the shop also has a selection of non-conventional road bikes with sloping top tubes or other exotic shapes, and these are offered in only 3 or 4 sizes. A bike’s size is more important when it has a conventional diamond frame. With a horizontal top tube, stand-over height is more crucial than with a sloping top tube.
